Hi I’m Heather Murray, the voice and thoughts behind Raising Good Humans. As a lover of education (and all it entails) and as an educational leader, I am committed to helping parents navigate life and school for themselves and their children. My journey has been an interesting one and my goal is to share what I have learned in order to help educate, inspire, and motivate as many as possible. Raising Good Humans is my way of sharing my personal experience and educational expertise with all of you. So who am I and why should you trust my advice?
I was born in Canada, moved to the States as a child, and later became a naturalized citizen. Having lived all over, I currently call Idaho home. I got married early (mid-twenties) - not something I necessarily recommend -when I met the man of my dreams in my twenties and the rest has been happy history. We are a blended family; we have three girls and one boy. We call the girls - daughters one, two, and three - affectionately. One and two are from my husband’s previous marriage and three and our son are ours. It hasn’t always been easy but we make it work. My husband’s corporate sales job moved us a lot (Austria, Canada, and multiple states and cities), starting from the time we were first married. We moved right after the birth of our daughter to Austria – what an experience. I still remember the first time I went out on my own, brain not fully functional from moving and giving birth, and locked our baby in the car! I didn’t yet speak the language and had to communicate silently with the parking garage attendant who didn’t speak English. Made it through but what a ride. As a mother, I can relate to our trials and tribulations and yet claim accomplished experience with raising four children to successful adulthood.
As an educator, I have had the privilege to work with all age groups and abilities. I have taught middle school, high school and college, gifted minds, those who can learn well, students needing support and those labeled at risk. I have been a Dean of Students, Student Council Advisor, Coach of Drill Team, Chair of a Department, and Principal, both middle school and elementary. The opportunity to start a high school for at risk youth is one of my fondest memories; I continue to hear of their successes twenty years later. In addition, I love to be in the classroom teaching – math is my subject. As a teacher, I have turned children’s hatred of math into love by being a teacher who can communicate, support, connect, and inspire. Uplifting children to reach their highest potential is a gift of mine. I have had the opportunity to change the way math is taught as the department chair and help other teachers reach their potential. As a principal, the possibility to improve education has been incredible and I have taken each opportunity to work toward the goal of creating great programs for children.
Through my years in education, I have helped parents understand education and how to help their children reach their highest potential. In an effort to aid more parents than those in my immediate care, I created Raising Good Humans. I’ve already helped many families improve their school experience, and I want to expand my ability to educate parents and at the same time help children grow to be their best and assist the parents raising them to be more successful than they ever imagined.
I hope you enjoy reading the advice I offer! I challenge you to implement what is offered in Raising Good Humans. If you don’t find that at least one of my tidbits helps you, please let me know. Engaging in conversation will help me fine tune my advice to your needs. And if you ever have suggestions for future blogs let me know!
XOXO,
Heather
